HealthUnity nominated for award

HealthUnity has been named a finalist in the interoperability category for the prestigious 2007 Microsoft Healthcare User Group (MS-HUG) awards!

The MS-HUG Awards showcase the most innovative independent software vendors (ISV) and customers of Microsoft® technology in the healthcare field. Finalists are selected by leading industry experts from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

"We are delighted to be recognized by MS-HUG", said Prem Urali, HealthUnity President and CEO. "This is a true acknowledgement of our achievements in building leading-edge interoperability and RHIO products and deploying solutions that meet the challenging requirements of healthcare entities."

HealthUnity received the finalist nomination in conjunction with Erickson Retirement Communities and Erickson HealthSM. Erickson Retirement Communities is the nation´s leading builder and manager of moderately priced continuing care retirement communities with a nationwide network of campuses serving more than 18,000 people. Erickson HealthSM is the nation´s largest integrated health care and wellness system for senior adults, consisting of an array of healthcare and wellness services integrated within each Erickson community, including resident staff geriatricians and specialized activities to help residents stay healthy and fit.

HealthUnity and Erickson are being recognized based on the groundbreaking work by the two organizations in providing electronic interoperability between Erickson´s on-site medical centers and their affiliated hospitals. The first deployment of the HealthUnity system is underway in Baltimore, linking the St. Agnes Hospital, a 309-bed community teaching hospital, to Erickson´s Charlestown retirement community. The secure network allows for the exchange of demographic information, problem lists, medications and allergies, discharge summaries and clinical summaries between the two facilities.

In the long term, there will be 3-year, phased rollouts of HealthUnity-powered networks across 18 other Erickson facilities; this also includes over 30 affiliated hospitals and over 100 specialty practices serving Erickson residents.

CEO Prem Urali to speak at MS-HUG forum

HealthUnity President and CEO Prem Urali will be part of a select group of featured speakers at the upcoming Microsoft Healthcare Users Group (MS-HUG) Tech Forum.

The MS-HUG Tech Forum, to take place in New Orleans on Sunday, February 25th 2007, will be held in conjunction with the 2007 HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition. It will highlight some of the leading users of Microsoft technologies and is focused on the practical application of these technologies in the healthcare industry.

Prem´s presentation, titled "Building a RHIO on Long Island: A Work in Progress" will be based on HealthUnity´s ongoing efforts in Long Island, New York. The presentation will highlight some of the common challenges facing RHIOs such as governance, identification of top value-added business scenarios, developing a sustainable business model, technical architectural options, protecting privacy and security among others. Prem will also talk about the HealthUnity solution approach and the challenges involved in reinventing the way patient data is shared among medical professionals.

Customers benefit from fast results delivery

Thanks to HealthUnity, certain Bellevue WA based healthcare practices are now receiving laboratory results electronically. "It makes it so much easier and quicker," stated Dr. Sumi Pathy, owner of Family Medicine Center. Dr. Romanick, another HealthUnity customer concurred, "Since I am starting a new practice, I wanted to make sure that I could receive information electronically. As a rheumatologist, I do a tremendous amount of lab work, and having the results delivered through HealthUnity has been really helpful." Both practices are taking advantage of HealthUnity´s partnership with PACLAB, a division of Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories (PAML).

Under the HealthUnity/PAML partnership, laboratory results are delivered electronically via the HealthUnity Regional Health Information Network (RHIN) system and viewed using the HealthUnity Client at the physician´s office providing not only quick access to the results, but also to certain historical records. These results are based on industry standard ELINCS HL7 format and are delivered into HealthUnity appliances located inside each of the clinics thus making it possible to easily implement full-fidelity integration with existing electronic medical record systems (EMR). Effort to integrate the results with EMRs is also underway.

Participating physicians no longer have to wait for daily faxes or courier drops to review lab results. As soon as the PAML´s lab information system generates a new result set, it is sent to the physician´s HealthUnity appliance. This translates to shorter turnaround times for the results and better patient care. The results are sorted by their criticality giving the user the ability to focus on the most critical results first.

As the community of HealthUnity-powered physicians expands, lab results imported into the chart of a patient at one location can be looked up by any of a growing number of physicians in the network - thereby saving the time and effort needed in requesting and receiving information. All this is done within the bounds of the privacy settings that are set at each practice and can be blocked for each patient if necessary.

Imminent General Availability of new product

HealthUnity is proud to announce the imminent general availability of Release 3.1 of our flagship product. The new release is scheduled for general availability by end of Q1, 2007. The new version is already scheduled for two large scale production deployments and incorporates a variety of new features such as:

  • Clinical summary on demand
  • Direct-to-EMR routing of results
  • Incoming document notification
  • Unified messaging integration
  • Lab results accumulation
  • EMR-Integrated workflows for GE Centricity
  • Integration adapters for Practice Partner, GE Centricity and MEDITECH
  • Improved physician workflows within the HealthUnity client
  • Extensive testing for performance, stress, scalability and security
  • Deployment scenario testing
  • Improved user documentation
  • Professional services (HealthUnity´s Rapid OnrampTM Methodology) and support services enhancements

All of the above features have been designed to build upon our current product offerings to further meet the requirements of our existing and new customers. We are very grateful for all the feedback provided by our outstanding healthcare customer community in the Baltimore (MD), Long Island (NY), and Spokane and Bellevue (WA) regions. This release is the culmination of many hours of effort and long days by the development group. Many thanks to the teams in Bellevue and Bangalore for their hard work!

Electronic lab results now available to customers

HealthUnity, Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories (PAML) and PACLAB Network Laboratories have established a technical and business partnership for electronic delivery of laboratory results from PAML and PACLAB labs to HealthUnity customers.

"This is an important agreement for us" said HealthUnity President and CEO Prem Urali, "and is consistent with our vision of providing a broad array of low cost and easy to use clinical result delivery services to our customers."

PAML is a division of Bourget Health Services, Inc., a subsidiary of Sacred Heart Medical Center, located in Spokane, WA. PAML operates a state-of-the-art, full-service reference laboratory and maintains other laboratory operations throughout the western United States. PAML delivers a wide range of testing services to more than 100 hospitals and hundreds of affiliated physician practices throughout Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, California, Utah, Wyoming, and Alaska.

PACLAB is a partnership between Providence Health System - Washington, Franciscan Health System - West, Overlake Hospital Medical Center, Bourget Health Services, Inc., Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories (PAML), Evergreen Healthcare, and Stevens Healthcare. PAML also serves as the managing partner. PACLAB's purpose is to apply timely, accurate and comprehensive laboratory services at a community level. PACLAB provides a community choice in an industry dominated by national players.

Mark Johnston, Chief Information Officer at PAML, added, "We are excited about working with HealthUnity. We have been very impressed by their technical approach to clinical results delivery and we are encouraged about their ability to provide a community view of clinical information and the delivery of our laboratory information to electronic health records. Our pilot sites in the Bellevue WA region have been successful and we anticipate broader deployment in that area."

Under the agreement, HealthUnity customers will be able to electronically receive laboratory results from PAML and PACLAB testing facilities directly into a HealthUnity appliance at the physician's office as an integrated part of their HealthUnity service. The benefits to the physicians include faster receipt of critical clinical lab values and universal access to current and historical values from any computer with the HealthUnity Client. Also, because HealthUnity is using a standards based approach to its results delivery, it is much easier for physicians to import the information directly into their existing electronic medical record systems.

The PAML/PACLAB agreement is part of HealthUnity's goal of aligning itself with leading technology and services companies that serve the physician market. Mutual HealthUnity and PAML customers are already taking advantage of the partnership at primary care and specialty practices in Bellevue, WA (see Customer section above). Jay Pathy, Vice-President of business development noted, "The positive feedback from these sites is very encouraging. We are looking forward to working with PAML to add many more practices."

Partnership announcement

HealthUnity® and Practice Partner®, one of the leading suppliers of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems in the U.S., have signed a product development and co-marketing memorandum of understanding.

"We are very excited about this agreement" said President and CEO Prem Urali. "EMR integration is a central part in our strategy of adding value to physicians in HealthUnity-powered networks. We are thrilled to be working with an established industry leader like Practice Partner."

Practice Partner, formerly known as Physician Micro Systems, Inc., or PMSI, is a leading provider of integrated electronic medical record and practice management software. More than 7,000 physicians and 1,500 ambulatory care practices of all sizes and specialties - from solo practitioners to large, multi-site groups - use Practice Partner´s award-winning software. Under the agreement, the two companies will work together to enhance the adapter and further develop a series of in-bound and out-bound interfaces between Practice Partner´s EMR application and HealthUnity products.

The results of this agreement will provide Practice Partner customers in HealthUnity-powered networks with enhanced interfacing capability to third party clinical data systems. Such systems include clinical reference labs, hospital information systems, other ambulatory practice management and electronic medical record systems and other sources. Additionally, by utilizing the co-developed interfaces, Practice Partner providers will be capable of securely sharing their data with other providers on HealthUnity network.

For Practice Partner, the partnership with HealthUnity offers an immediate selling advantage at regional health information networks that are powered by HealthUnity, by reducing the time and cost of deploying interfaces and providing a multi-interface interoperability solution to providers.

"HealthUnity offers us a great way to participate in RHIOs and healthcare information networks in a way that will be helpful to our business and our customers" noted Practice Partner CEO Andrew G. Ury, M.D.

The two companies, who have been informally working together for several months prior to agreement, hope to showcase their efforts at emerging HealthUnity networks in New York, Baltimore, and the State of Washington.
