HIE

Health Information Exchange –An electronic mobilization of health care information between different organizations within a region or community.

HIN

Health Information Network – A network may comprise of one exchange or a set of exchanges that are interconnected to each other. The NHIN (National Health Information Network) is a network of exchanges.

Stakeholder organization / Health provider organization / provider organization / customer

These terms refer to any healthcare provider such as physician practices, hospitals, radiology centers or laboratories participating in an implementation project. In an Enterprise HIN context, the terms may also be extended to refer to departments in a hospital or IDN (Integrated Delivery Network).

Stage

A stage is a major unit step in the implementation process. Each stage contains a list of deliverables and must lead to one or more major project milestone.

Phase

A phase is a complete cycle of deployment starting from Plan to Closure. A project is deployed in phases to keep the scope manageable in each phase. A phase is composed of one or more stages. Each phase needs to be planned in advance and a master plan needs to be generated. The master phase plan provides details of all phase, stages and their timelines.
